I wanted to make something fun with a small rose I wrote down the pattern for, and the idea for my ball of roses took form. It has a cord with a loop and you can hang it up somewhere to bring a little bit of summer inside!
(Mönster på svenska finns här.)
The pattern for the rose is easy to make and you’ll find it below. I made 60 roses in three different colors, with a leaf for each rose. The roses are sewn onto the surface of a crocheted ball filled with toy stuffing.
Here you can see the ball with just a couple of roses sewn on:

I used a crocheting thread that gives 170 m/50 g (186 yds/1,8 oz), and a 2,0 mm hook. Less than 50 g of each color is needed. You can use any color you want for the flowers – I used white, hot pink and purple/magenta for mine and green for the ball, leaves and cord.
(Blocking the flowers before they are assembled makes the petals even and straight.)
The ball with the flowers is about 13 cm (5″) in diameter.

Pattern for Ball of Roses
(The pattern is in american english.)

Flower
ROW 1: Ch 26. Turn.
ROW 2: Sl st in the second ch from the hook. *Ch 2. Skip the next ch. Sl st in the next ch.* Repeat *-* until you get to the end of the chain. (You will have 12 chainspaces in total). See picture 1. Turn.
ROW 3: This row is only crocheted in the chainspaces. Sl st in the first ch-sp of the row. (3 sc + sl st) in the same ch-sp. (Sl st + 3 sc + sl st) in the next ch-sp*. Repeat *-* in total 3 times. You will have 4 small petals, see picture 2. *(Sl st + ch 2 + 3 dc + sc + sl st) in the next ch sp*. Repeat *-* in total 8 times. You will have 8 big petals, see picture 3.
Assembly of the flower
Fold the first two small petals (as shown in picture 4 above) and sew in place with a small stitch at the base of the flower.

(In picture 5 you can see me sewing stitches at the bottom of the flower). Keep folding the petals and sewing them in place, see picture 6.
When you’re done the flower will look like the one in picture 7. The leaf is sewn to the bottom of the flower with the wrong side up, see picture 8.

Leaf
The leaf is crocheted in a spiral, first in the front loops and then in the back loops of the chain. When it’s finished the chain will be at the center of the leaf.
ROW 1: Ch 8.
ROW 2: 1 sl st in the front loop of the second ch from the hook. 1 sc in the next 5 front loops. 1 sl st in the next front loop. It will now look like picture 1. (In picture 2 I’m pointing at the back loops you’re going to crochet into next.) 1 sl st in the next back loop of the chain. 1 sc in the next 2 back loops, see picture 3. 1 sc in the next 3 back loops. 1 sl st in the next back loop. (14 st) The leaf is finished and looks like picture 4.
Fasten off at the back of the leaf and sew along the middle.
Green ball
ROW 1: With green yarn. 6 sc in a magic ring.
ROW 2: 2 sc in every sc. (12 st)
ROW 3: 1 sc in the next sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat. (18 st)
ROW 4: 1 sc in the next 2 sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat. (24 st)
ROW 5: 1 sc in the next 3 sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat. (30 st)
ROW 6: 1 sc in the next 4 sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat. (36 st)
ROW 7: 1 sc in the next 5 sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat. (42 st)
ROW 8: 1 sc in the next 6 sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat. (48 st)
ROW 9: 1 sc in the next 7 sc, 2 sc in the next sc. Repeat. (54 st)
ROW 10-23: 1 sc in every sc. (54 st)
ROW 24: 1 sc in the next 7 sc, 2 sc together. Repeat. (48 st)
ROW 25: 1 sc in the next 6 sc, 2 sc together. Repeat. (42 st)
ROW 26: 1 sc in the next 5 sc, 2 sc together. Repeat. (36 st)
ROW 27: 1 sc in the next 4 sc, 2 sc together. Repeat. (30 st)
ROW 28: 1 sc in the next 3 sc, 2 sc together. Repeat. (24 st) Stuff the ball with toy stuffing.
ROW 29: 1 sc in the next 2 sc, 2 sc together. Repeat. (18 st)
ROW 30: 1 sc in the next sc, 2 sc together. Repeat. (12 st) Fill with more stuffing if needed.
ROW 31: 2 sc together. Repeat. End with a sl st and sew the hole closed. (6 st)
Crocheted cord with loop
ROW 1: With green yarn. Ch 36. Turn.
ROW 1: Skip the next ch 12, sl st to the next ch 24. Fasten off.
The length of the cord is about 14 cm (5,5″). If you want a longer or shorter cord you just change the number of chains.
Sew the cord to the start of row 1 of the ball. Keep adding flowers around the cord as shown in the pictures below.

The flowers are sewn in place with yarn in the same color as the flower, see the picture to the left.
You can get rid of extra yarn ends attached to the flower like this: Thread a darning needle with all the yarn ends, insert the the needle where the flower will go and take it out somewhere else on the ”ball”. Sew the flower in place and then cut all the extra yarn ends as shown in the picture to the right.
I made about the same number of flowers in the 3 different colors: 21 white, 19 pink and 20 purple/magenta, in total 60 roses. I tried to mix them up to get a natural look.
How many roses you will need can vary depending on how close they are sewn together.
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
st = stitch
sl st = slip stitch
ch-sp = chain space
