Punk Rock Bear

I wanted to make something fun and a little bit different, that’s when I got the idea to make this teddybear with an attitude!
Punk rock band The Clash is this bears favorite band (and is one of my favorites as well.)

(Mönster på svenska finns här.)

The skull is crocheted but the other details like band name and tattoo are sewn on with a tapestry needle. It takes some practise, and a tip is to choose a band name that is short and easy to sew. Here’s two other examples:

The pattern for the bear is pretty easy and suited for beginners. The skull is a little trickier to get right, that’s why I have made a picture tutorial where you can see what every step should look like.
All assembly notes are at the end of the pattern.

The height of the bear is 20 cm (about 8″). You can use any yarn you like, if you want the same height use cotton yarn that gives 120 m/50 g (130 yds/1,8 oz). Use a smaller hook than stated on the yarn label when making crocheted animals, that way the toy stuffing is kept in place. I used a 2,5 mm hook.

You will need these yarn colors: brown, black and red. 50-70 g (1,8-2,5 oz) of the brown yarn, less than 50 g of the other two colors is needed. Also a little bit of off-white or light yellow yarn for the footpads and thinner white crocheting thread for the skull and other details plus toy stuffing.

Skull:
Use thinner white yarn/crocheting thread for the skull. Crochet back and forth.

Picture 1: Start with ch 9. Sl st to the first ch and you make the chain into a ring.
Picture 2: Ch 9. Sl st into the same stitch you crocheted a sl st to previously, and the project will look like the number eight as shown in the picture.
Picture 3: Crochet 12 sc into the first ring. Next you will crochet 12 sc into the second ring and fasten off.

The eyes of the skull are done and we’re now going to make the top of the skull.
Picture 4: Start with new thread in the 5th sc counted from the middle of the ”number eight” (as shown in the picture). Ch 1. 1 sc in the next 3 sc. Skip 2 sc (the last sc of the ring and the first of the next ring). 1 sc in the next 4 sc. Turn.
(Don’t start with a ch 1). Skip the first sc. 2 sc together. 1 sc in the next 2 sc. 2 sc together, skip the last ch and fasten off. The skull will now look like picture 5.

Picture 6: Turn the skull upside down. We’re now making the jaws of the skull.
ROW 1: Start with new thread in the 3rd sc counted from the middle of the ”number eight”, as shown in the picture. Ch 1. 1 sc in the next 5 sc. Turn (6 st)
ROW 2: Ch 1. 1 sc in the next 5 sc, 1 sc in the first ch of the previous row. It will look like picture 7. Turn. (7 st)
ROW 3: Ch 3. Skip the first 2 sc. 1 dc in the next sc, ch 1. Skip the next sc. 1 dc in the next sc, ch 1. Skip the next sc. 1 dc in the first ch of the previous row. Now the skull looks like picture 8. Turn. (7 st)
ROW 4: Ch 1. 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next ch-space, 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next ch-space, 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next ch-space, 1 sc in the second ch of the previous row. Fasten off (8 st)
The skull now looks like the picture below. Sew to the middle of the shirt on the chest of the bear.

Assembly:
Stuff the head and sew on top of the body (make sure there’s enough stuffing in the neck area.) Stuff the nose and sew to the head. Sew eyes above the nose with black and white thread (see picture.) You can also use safety eyes if you want to, sew a line above them to get a cooler look.

Flatten the ears, bend them a little to make them ear-shaped and sew to the top of the head. Make sure there is enough room between the eyes and the ears for the bandana, the ears should be placed pretty high up. Sew the two ends of the bandana together. Place the bandana around the head as shown in the picture above and sew it in place with red yarn.

Stuff the legs, sew them to the body. They should point in different directions as shown in the picture above. Stuff the tail a little and sew to the backside.

Sew the openings of the arms closed. Sew the arms to the sides of the body (see picture).

On each arm the bear has a black bracelet made of yarn wrapped around the arm. Sew a stitch on the inside of the arm each or every other row and the bracelet will stay on.

The left arm has a tattoo of the anarchist sign made with black thread.
On the back of the shirt there’s a bandname sewn with white thread, see the pictures at the top of the post.
